Where did it come from?
It was one of the greatest nights of our lives: our son's Eagle Scout Court of Honor.
Part of the ceremony examined the Scout Law, not just rattling it off like a mantra but taking it apart - drilling down to
what it really means to be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful and the other attributes we'd mechanically repeated a thousand times.
It was as if we were hearing about Scouting for the first time. And we realized that, separate from the organization and stripped of the ceremony, these core principles were solid fundamentals for everyone - men and women, young and old, Scouts and non-Scouts. By the time that Court of Honor was finished, The Scouting Way had already begun.
Who created it?
The Scouting Way was created by Jeff and Sandra Schwartz. They're a family of scouts and tech enthusiasts the Wall Street Journal called "real-life Jetsons" (click to read).
As kids, Jeff was a Cub Scout and Sandra was a Brownie who went on through Cadettes.
Their son, Greg, started as a Tiger Cub and went all the way to Eagle Scout. Jeff was Committee Chairman of the Troop and a Wood Badge graduate. Sandra was a Tiger Cub co-Leader, trained Boy Scout Leader, and chaired numerous Troop committees.
Their daughter, Lauren, started as a Daisy and is currently working on her Gold Award. Sandra was a Girl Scout Leader that entire time.
They live with their Labrador Retriever named (what else?) Scout, in San Clemente, CA.
